Suicide Prevention Action Plan Revealed

Plan is a Result of Four Community Engagement Meetings

 

St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 will implement a Suicide Prevention Action Plan that was developed during the Summit on Suicide Prevention. The four session community engagement sessions gathered input from members of the community including several civic, community, law enforcement and faith-based agencies.
 
The basis of the Suicide Prevention Action Plan is four goals developed by the community.
  1. All District 303 students will know what supports are available for depression and suicide prevention and where to go for help at school and in the community
  2. All District 303 parents will know what supports are available for depression and suicide prevention and where to go for help at school and in the community
  3. The community will understand the importance of our students’ mental health and identify opportunities to support our students and parents
  4. All staff will be trained in recognizing students who are at risk for suicide and depression and provide appropriate level of support
Several of the items contained in the Action Plan came from the input of students during the Summit on Suicide Prevention sessions. Some of those suggestions include:
  • Use electronic communication tools favored by students such as text messaging, Facebook and Twitter
  • Provide mental health support information on the back of student ID cards
  • Implement programs designed to promote resiliency and emotional health
In addition, pending Board of Education approval, District 303 will enter a contractual agreement with Suicide Prevention Services of Batavia to provide additional support and staff training.  Click here for full presentation...
 
D303 Suicide Summit Schedule

St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 is inviting the community to gather for the final session of the Summit on Suicide Prevention.  The session will take place on Wednesday, June 10 from 7-9 p.m. in the Summit Room at Charlestowne Mall.  The Summit Room is located on the lower level of the Charlestowne Mall just inside the Theater Entrance.

The main task on the agenda for community members attending the meeting will be to develop agreements for future action. Additionally, a panel of community members who have lost loved ones to suicide will provide their perspectives and relay their experiences.
